October 31, 2006 -- The NYPD is taking a page from state probation and parole officials today by checking up on the Big Apple's worst pedophiles as kids embark on their Halloween trick-or-treating.
Cops in the sexual-offender monitoring unit will visit at least 200 of the city's Level 3 child-sex fiends throughout the day.
"We want to make a special effort . . . to see that the message goes forth, that we're there; we're concerned about any possible danger to young people," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.
The NYPD's initiative is similar to "Operation Halloween: Zero Tolerance," where probation and parole officials will work to ensure that hundreds of the city's more than 1,600 convicted perverts under their supervision remain behind closed doors from 3 p.m. today to 6 a.m. tomorrow.
