Every state recognizes a special duty to protect children. Across the country, states have defined numerous crimes against children, provided higher levels of punishment for crimes committed against children, required the reporting of crimes against children, and adopted a variety of special laws aimed at reducing the victimization of children.

The evening began with a reception featuring fruity wine cocktails sponsored by Martini & Rossi in the screening lounge of the historic Magno Sound Theater. Magno has worked on hundreds of productions, from tv's Sex and the City to films as diverse as Spiderman, Philadelphia, Men in Black, and The Cider House Rules. The Independent Film Channel approached the Alliance with the film since sherrybaby provides an unusually realistic portrayal of the cycle of trauma that often afflicts victims of childhood sexual abuse. Maggie Gylenhaal, whose performance has received rave reviews, came to answer questions after the screening. After a lively discussion with the audience, we reluctantly let her go (she's eight months pregnant) although everyone said the questions could have continued through the night.
