Quarterly Meeting Review : Planning Next Steps with Adolescent Issues
The Alliance Quarterly meeting held in January was convened as a follow-up to the last Directors Forum in which adolescents were identified as a major focus for collaborative efforts. In addition, a check-in in reference to the World Trade Center disaster was also included because it was felt that it was a necessity for programs that serve trauma survivors in New York City. Policy Advisory Committee
The Alliance continues to strengthen its role as a leader in the creation of public policy on sexual violence issues. To achieve this goal, a Policy Advisory Committee was formed which met for the first time in November of 2001. [more]

Spotlight On: Denise Briales
Denise Briales is a Child and Family Advocate and Counselor at the Brooklyn Child Advocacy Center (BAC), a program of Safe Horizon and the only DOH funded child advocacy center. She works with a multidisciplinary team of prosecutors, medical specialists, Child Protection Services and the Brooklyn Child Abuse Squad. [more]

Commitment to Care : High Turnout for Fall SAE Training
Over 30 people attended the Fall Sexual Assault Examiner (SAE) training of the Forensic Healthcare Program, making it one of the largest recent trainings. In a time of city-wide and nation-wide crisis, it is inspiring that this sizeable group of people were willing to take the extra steps necessary to attend the five-day program and become Sexual Assault Examiners. A Separate Reality : Programs Commit to Improving Services to Adolescent Survivors
Straddling the worlds of child and adulthood, adolescents inhabit a distinct reality and have specific developmental needs. When they are victims of sexual assault or abuse, teens are generally treated in programs that focus on either children or adults because there are very few specialized treatment programs for that age group. A New View on Achieving Cultural Competency
This three part series that took place at Long Island College Hospital was enlightening and refreshing. The programÕs facilitators, Caroline Rosenthal, DSW and Cheryl Franks, DSW, from the New York University and Columbia University Schools of Social Work, respectively, had a distinct approach that emphasized the importance of self-awareness as the key to beginning the journey towards cultural competency.
