New York City kids are victims of sexual violence at rates almost twice the national average, according to a new study.

One in six high school students surveyed said he or she had experienced sexual violence. For 89% of the victims, the violence was committed by someone they knew.

"Youth are not experiencing sexual violence from strangers in dark alleys," said Deborah Fry, director of research for the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault.

More than a quarter of those who had dating partners said they had been pushed or shoved, while 10% reported an unwanted sexual touch.

"I'm not surprised," said Washington Heights high schooler Marian Martinez, 17. She said she had heard of many cases of girls being sexually assaulted at parties, and that a friend is currently in a violent relationship.

"Lately, he hits her, but she says it's okay," Marian said. "It goes both ways, because she hits him, too.
