FACTSHEET:
Safety Tips for Parents

As a parent, one of your primary concerns is your child's safety. While some dangers--a hot stove, traffic or an electrical outlet--seem easy to explain, dangers that involve violence may seem more difficult to talk about. You may be afraid that you will frighten your child. You may not know how to explain violence, or where to start. You may also not want to recognize that your child could become a victim of a crime.

Letter from the Executive Director

July 2000

Dear Friend,

I am very proud to present the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault Resource Guide to Sexual Assault/Abuse Services in New York City. Every effort has been made to ensure that the guide is a complete and comprehensive listing of specialized programs within the city. Included you will find hospital based rape crisis programs, child and adolescent programs, sex offender programs, District Attorney’s office programs and other specialized services. The criteria for inclusion is either specialized funding or an ongoing agency commitment to training and supervision in sexual violence issues.

What we could not do is evaluate these services. Inclusion in this guide does not constitute endorsement by the Alliance. I recommend that everyone who seeks assistance be a good consumer. While I understand that this is difficult during a time of crisis, you still have to determine whether a program or provider is right for you. You have the right to ask questions about the program, the practitioners, their training and expe-rience with your issue, philosophy of care and their hours and fees. It is important that you have a level of comfort with the answers and service.

I hope you find this guide useful. The Alliance is interested in any feed-back you may have about the information in this guide. Please feel free to call the office at  (212) 229-0345 with any questions or additional information.

To your health and well being.

Sincerely,
Harriet Lessel
Executive Director
